Hope Love Pain, has been in production for over a year, truthfully; I just tend to be a little slower on my own stuff. Sonically, it brings me back to my childhood on 20+ hour car trips from the east coast of Canada to northern Ontario where we'd all get turns to play "disc jockey." Pops would be playing Leonard Cohen cassettes, mom would be spinning a Madonna record while my brother would be pushing Led Zeppelin. Out of sheer embarrassment, I won't mention my pick but let's just say I was to legit to quit.
Fast forward to my twenties where I spent a decade listening to Peter Gabriel's "So" and "Up" albums, at times exclusively. The textures, the phrasing... all of that really excited me. Hope Love Pain manages to catch a little Cohen and Gabriel while staying true to doing its own thing. Lyrically it's just a reminder of the difficulties we all face, but also of the hope we have to take with us. I think the songs most poignant lyric helps sum up best what I'm trying to convey "Everybody wears pain real close, so close it's hard to take it off. But love is a choice He already made, we're living it now everyday with hope, love and pain."
I hope you enjoy the music,
Bennett
lyrics
Verse
Fear. I'm afraid of what we've come to here.
Pain. Feel stuck in this jungle and it's hard to find love; the greatest gift we've ever known.
Love; so easy to give so hard to hold.
Hope. Am I willing to put up a fight, same fight each night?
Hope. Am I keeping my eye on the prize? Our hope, our prize.
Man I keep catching myself in the mirror thinking this dude, not Jesus. Yeah, I keep catching myself in the mirror.
Chorus
Hope love pain aren't going away. Write that down, remember it.
All I know, they come and go momentum to wild to control. Hope love and pain.
Verse
That's the thing about hope sometimes, takes a long night to prove a sunrise.
Everybody wears pain real close, so close it's hard to take it off.
But love is a choice He already made, we're living it now everyday with hope love and pain.
