Turn the Lights On/Amazing Grace Verse I
Turn the Lights on this is Heaven, take off your coat and stay awhile. We’ve got all the time, round’ here before time runs out.
Say the nations are here, and the atmosphere is like nothing I’ve ever felt. I’ve been having me some conversations in a strange new language, words coming right outta’ my mouth. And we’ve all just been signing the most beautiful song; it goes.

Chorus
Hallelujah! Salvation and glory,
honor and power unto the Lord our God. Verse II I was welcomed in with a trumpet blast... A trumpet blast, can you believe that?! The tears wiped away from my eyes. There was no more sorrow, no more pain, no more death, no more brokenness; all the former things had passed away. And we’ve all just been singing the most beautiful song. Chorus
Hallelujah! Salvation and glory, honor and power unto the Lord our God. Bridge
When we’ve been there, ten thousand years bright shining as the sun. We’ve no less days to sing God’s praises then when we first begun. Turn the lights on. Words & Music © 2010 Bennett Hughes Amazing Grace: Words by John Newton. Public domain.

Dear John (You're on my Mind) I'm so shot up but my eyes are dry I'm seeing your face for the very first time. You are on my mind. Remembering times when you made us laugh, living each day like its the last we had. You are on my mind. Farewell, goodnight. So caught up on a September's day woulda' held you longer if I knew it'd be the very last time. There's a little boy here who looks just like dad one day I'll tell em' bout the times we had. You are on my mind. Farewell, goodnight. I hope when they lay you down in the earth the sun comes out and shines new like you. You are on my mind. Farewell, goodnight. © 2012 Words & Music Bennett Hughes

Goodness 04:21
Goodness V1 Right and Wrong I've entertained em both. Gave em the best seats to my lavish show. Brought em along every time I thought, holding em hostage at my carnal ball. Nobody's getting out here alive (one of those thoughts I kept hostage inside my mind.) It was a tough way to live but I was living it; confusion's confusing when you're stuck in it. V2 Right and Wrong well one's gotta go, I'll need a miracle just to believe one could. Help to do right along the way, remind me the purpose to my every day. C Goodness The best part now is just waking up. Goodness In a world gone mad God you're still reaching out. V3 If there's hope in me it's because of You. If there's love in me it's only You. If there's good in me it's the good in You. The life left in me, it's all for You. Outro Surely goodness and mercy will follow me, all the days of my life. © 2011 Words & Music by Bennett Hughes

about

Allow me to share a little story about this album…

A few years ago I attended a book publishers seminar in New York City. The keynote speaker, a skinny, middle aged gentleman took the podium with his brand new, two thousand page monstrosity of a book. He gave a brief presentation, and afterwards opened up the floor for questions.

Someone asked the skinny gentleman, "before the book deals, before the advances, before you were a New York Times bestseller (his last three books had been on the list)… when did you find time to write?" His response is something I took with me, and still find myself pondering from time to time. He informed the audience that at the time of his first novel he had a full time teaching position, a lovely wife and small but growing family. It wasn't his intention to neglect his loved ones or his job, besides, bread must be set on the table and somebody had to mow the lawn. His solution was to wake up early during the work week, before the kids, and write for an hour. Each Saturday, he would hit up the local public library and scribble until lunchtime. This process continued for, get this… 10 years. Finally the book was finished, and not too long after found its way to New York's list, and eventually to my apartment floor as a door stop for a couple years before I finally cracked it open.

If one image comes to my mind concerning "Turn the Lights On", it's of a 20' by 15' by 9' room lit by a single lamp. I spent a great deal of time sitting down in that room in the early, early morning hours and recording way to many overdubs and mixing and re-mixing, and mixing and re-mixing…never without my trusty "recording engineers how to" book on my lap (Owsinski you rock). These short five songs took just over a year to complete. I found that a diligent approach proved to be very helpful, and if I hoped to finish, absolutely necessary. Each morning before pressing record, I'd sip on a cup of coffee with my bible open, praying over these songs and asking that they'd draw people to, back, or closer to Jesus. From my mixing room, I'd head to the car to check the mix, decked out in flannel and slippers. I once waved to the paper boy as he'd arrived to drop off the news, he no doubt thought me crazy… I mean really, who sits in their driveway at that hour, with the car off, listening to music?

I do hope you dig these tunes, and I only wish they were packaged a little bigger, so a least you could prop it in a door if it didn't work out sonically for you… alas, might make a good coster? But here's to hoping & believing that the tunes will hit much deeper than that.

May the Grace, Peace, and Truth of Jesus Christ find and guide you. I've never regretted letting Him in.
